(Obit from Indiana Weekly Messenger – July 29, 1926) Nellie Elizabeth Smith, aged 35 years, died at her home near Cherry Tree on July 17, following a brief illness. She was a highly esteemed woman and had a personality that won and held many friends. She leaves her husband and these five children, all residing at home: Bernice, Heloise, Dorothy, Pauline and Clifford. Funeral services were conducted at the Pine Grove Wesleyan Methodist church and interment was made in the Thompson cemetery.
Nell Elizabeth Spicher Smith was the daughter of William and Lula (Wassam) Spicher. Her mother died on December 1st, just two months after her birth and is buried in Fry Cemetery. When Nell was two years old, her father married Sadie Lydic who raised her as her daughter. In addition to her brother, Earl Ford Spicher, who was born two years earlier, she had three younger half-siblings: Doyle, Sara Ruth, and Barney.
In April 1910, Nell married Frank Sanders Smith. At her death, her children ranged in ages from three to fifteen.
