Civil War Union Army Officer. One of the first people from Rhode Island to volunteers for the Union Army at the start of the Civil War, he was commissioned Colonel and commander of the 2nd Rhode Island Volunteer Infantry. He was killed in action at the First Battle of Bull Run on July 21, 1861.
