John attended both NCSU and UNC. He lived in Raleigh and worked as a Chemist for the State Department of Agriculture for many years. He was transferred to the State Laboratory of Hygiene in 1918. Later that year he volunteered for service and was sent to the Army Medical School in Washington, D.C. He was then transferred to the Sanitary Corps at Camp Upton, NY for service in the Water Purification Detachment. He contracted pneumonia and died at the Camp Upton Base Hospital.

His remains were returned to NC for burial, and a funeral was conducted at the Episcopal Church (?) in Wilson.


John is one of the thirty four men honored by the NCSU Memorial BellTower.
