August Woltmann was born in Posen, Germany in 1869. Early records show his name as Michael August. He was the son of Michael and Henriette Hedt Woltmann.
On April 16, 1886, he arrived at the port of New York aboard the SS Elbe with his parents and his sister Caroline Woltmann Reinke. The family subsequently made their way to Texas, where they joined several of August's siblings.
In 1897 August married Anna Bender in Austin County. They later moved to Temple, Texas. August worked as a clerk in the Frank Mot store at nearby Seaton; as a bartender at the Silver King Saloon in Belton; and as a yardman for G. Brotherman and Sons in Temple. The 1910 census shows August and Anna with 6 children: August, Annie, Gottfried, Querinnus, Juanita, and Pearl. They lost a young son in 1908 and an infant daughter in 1911.
Anna Bender Woltmann died in 1914 at the age of 36. Later that year, August married Anna Svejcara but this marriage did not last.
August and his family eventually moved to Detroit, Michigan where he worked as an oiler in an auto factory. He died in 1935.
