Earl A. Long 82 of Joplin passed away on Sunday January 10, 2010 at 11;25 P.M. at Joplin Health and Rehabilitation Center after an illness.

Earl was born on May 3, 1927 in Joplin, son of the late Harry Austin Long and Lela Irene Hodge Long. He was a lifetime resident of Joplin.

Earl was a member of our greatest generation, serving our cuntry in the United States Navy during World War II. As with many men in his generation, he left high school to defend our nation. He was awarded his diploma from Joplin High School in 2002.
On May 1. 1948 he married Mary L. Short. She preceded him in death on March 13,2007. Mary and Earl enjoyed hunting and fishing together. They saw many sunrises at Roaring River on opening day of trout season, They had numerous fun trios together, always with Earl Driving. as he refused to fly on a airplane. Many family trips were taken to archery tournaments, where Earl competed at both the State and National Levels.

Earl was a member of International Brotherhood of Electricial Workers Local Union #95. He worked for over 40 years as a licensed electrician. His expertise helped in the construction of Northpark Mall, several buildings at MSSU and many other important buildings.

Earl served on the Redings Mill School Board of Education before it was consolidated with Seneca School District.
Earl had a talent for fixing anything that was broken. He built cabinets and furniture for his home and for others too. Even after his sight was nearly gone, he continued to build squirrel feeders and birdhouses. He had a love for animals and for all of nature.

Earls greatest joy was his family. He had always had time for his grandkids and kept the refrigerator stocked with pop and suckers for all his kids.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two sons, Mickey Long and Greg Long, 8 brothers and 1 sister.

Survvors include three children, Teresa Janssen and husband Mike of Denver CO. Brad Long and wife Marcia of Joplin, Tom Long and wife Debbie of Joplin. ten grandchildren , 10 great grandchildren, and one more great grandson due in April. also surviving are two sisters, Marcella Oxford of Joplin, and Myrna Boles of Phoenix AZ.

The family will receive friends at Parker Mortuary from 6-7p.m. Wednesday. The body will be cremated. Interment will be at Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield Mo.
