died aged 90 in a nursing home; born in Conway where he lived from birth to 1945 when he sold his farm; the Howlands had been one of the leading families in Conway since coming here in 1787; operated a farm and was a builder; served on the Conway School Committee for 50 years and was tax collector for the town; member of United church; moved to Southampton 12 years ago; was a big man physically and few could equal him in filling an ice house, or sawing wood by the old horsepower treadmill; he could turn his hand to almost any kind of repair job and never lacked employment of that sort; graduate of Dickinson Academy, now Deerfield Academy; was interested in education and was elected to the Conway school committee in 1891, was chairman until he left in 1945; was for many years deacon of Congregational church in Conway which he had joined as a boy and he held every important office at one time or another; survivors were his widow, two sons Willard F of Main street, and Walter M of Elm street both in Southampton, three daughters Mrs Miles Tinker of St Paul Minn., Mrs Eli Felton of Pittsfield, Mrs Melvin Rawitsch of Whittier Calif., two sisters Mrs Thomas Munson of Conway and Mrs Ralph Laidley of Londonderry, Vt., 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; funeral from First Congregational church, Rev. Jonathan Albright officiating, burial in Center Cemetery [published Monday, March 24, 1958, Springfield Union AND Greenfield Recorder-Gazette March 28, 1958 pg 4 - above is combination of details from both articles]
