Thomas R. Lloyd II, 92, of Cambridge, passed away Friday (Nov. 23, 2012).

Born in Cambridge, son of the late John R. Lloyd and Margaret (Patterson) Lloyd, he went on to graduate from Muskingum University (1937-1941) after Cambridge Schools. From there, he continued studies at the College of Engineering of The Ohio State University (1941-1943) before heading to Duke University, School of Law, where he received his Juris Doctor in 1947.

In 1947, Lloyd was admitted to practice law by the Supreme Court of Ohio. He went into private practice until leaving for public service in 1951 when he was made an Assistant Attorney General (Ohio). In 1955, he received dual state appointments when made Special Counsel to the Attorney General (1955-1963) and subsequently asked to serve as member and chairman of the Ohio State Racing Commission (1955-1959) by the Governor.

Lloyd was chairman of the Guernsey County Republican Party for 25 years, and also served as District Chairman, as well as on the State Central and Executive Committee. He served as a delegate in multiple Republican National Conventions, and the service work for which he was most proud was his behind the scenes involvement in bringing the issue of Salt Fork Lake construction to vote in the Ohio General Assembly.

During the years 1961 to 1985, Lloyd engaged in business with investments in banking, real estate, oil and hotels. During his work in business, Lloyd was made an Ohio Commodore by Governor Rhodes for his contributions to Ohio industry. By the late 1970s, Lloyd's businesses employed over 3,000 people and he at one time was the sole owner of the then two largest hotels in Ohio.

In the late 1980s, Lloyd returned to private practice, often traveling as an attorney, specializing in finance, real property, corporate reorganization, business sale and acquisition, debtor and creditor law, insolvency and bankruptcy law.

Lloyd was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, legal fraternity Phi Delta Phi as well as numerous clubs, and a licensed pilot. Professionally, he was a member of the Ohio State Bar Association and admitted to practice by the Supreme Court of Ohio, U.S. District Court (Southern District of Ohio), U.S. Bankruptcy Court (Southern District of Ohio), U.S. Court of Appeals, and The U.S. Supreme Court, in addition to being a licensed real estate broker.

Lloyd is preceded in death by his parents; brother, John R. Lloyd II; and wife, Doris I. Lloyd.

He is survived by his son, Thomas R. Lloyd III of Cambridge; granddaughters, Kiah I. Lloyd of Cambridge, Trisha Peters and expected granddaughter of Cambridge; special mention, Loretta Ruggiero-Manni of Chardon; nieces, Victoria Lloyd-Foster of Montgomery, Louise Lloyd-Prescott of Maine, Ellen Lloyd-Attridge of Massachusetts, Jennifer Pointer-Moore of Byesville; and nephews, John Lloyd III of New Hampshire, David Lloyd of Massachusetts and Jamie Price of Cambridge.

Graveside services will be Tuesday (November 27, 2012) at 2 p.m. in the Northwood Cemetery, Cambridge.
