He was the son of Dabney Abner And Bertha Tyler Bowles.

He joined the Missouri State Guard Confederate on July 10, 1861. He was 3rd Lieutenant in 1st Regiment Cavalry - 2nd Division under Major General Sterling Price, Colonel Joseph C. Porter and Captain J. W. Priest. Later he entered the Confederate Army, Hicks Company, Missouri Cavalry under Colonal Joseph C. Porter and Captain J. W. Hicks and became 1st Lieutenant.

He married Mary Eliza Bowles daughter of Augustine E. Bowles of near Quincy, Illinois, Aug. 28, 1870. They moved to Monmouth, Warren County, Illinois and he took up farming which he followed until he retired.
