Clyde J. Ditch, 78, of 316 S. Main St., Mont Alto, died at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 22, 1999, in his home. He had been in failing health for the past nine months and critically ill for the past two weeks. Born July 4, 1921, in Roadside, Washington Township, he was the son of the late Norman and Katherine (Patterson) Ditch. He lived his early life in the Waynesboro area. Mr. Ditch attended the former Roadside School located on Country Club Road, near Waynesboro. He served with the U.S. Army Military Police. While in the service, he was stationed in Alaska. He and his wife, Bessie V.(Ickes) Ditch, were married July 12, 1948. They moved to their present residence in 1976. Mrs. Ditch died Dec. 18, 1996. Mr. Ditch worked in construction all of his life. He worked with Nitterhouse Construction, Chambersburg, and Crown America, Johnstown. He last worked with Union 910, Johnstown, before retiring in 1983. He was a member of the New Guilford Brethren in Christ Church, Chambersburg. He also was a member of Fraternal Order of Eagles 1758 and Joe Stickell American Legion Post 15, both of Waynesboro; Blue Ridge Sportsmen Club, Blue Ridge Summit; Fairfield AMVETS Post 172; Marine Corps League of Chambersburg; and Minnequa Social Club and Hub City, both of Shippensburg.
Mr. Ditch is survived by two daughters, Wanda J. Ditch and Barbara K. Rotz, both of Mont Alto; two sons, Arthur E. Ickes and Terry Ditch, both of Chambersburg; six grandchildren, five great-children; three sisters,Katherine Daywalt of Fayetteville and Lucy Sprankle andEva Shockey, both of Waynesboro; and three brothers, Richard Ditch, Lee Ditch and Melvin "Pete" Ditch, all of Waynesboro.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Ditch was preceded in death by three brothers, Kenneth Ditch, Walter Ditch and Joseph Ditch.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Grove Funeral Home, Waynesboro, with Pastor Robert D. Vemo officiating. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery, Quincy.
Graveside military services will be conducted by Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post 1599 Honor Guard, Chambersburg. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
