Mr Youland was one of the foremost merchants of Biddeford, Maine, was born in Durham,Maine. In 1861 The Youland family moved to a farm in Lisbon Centre, Maine. At age 10 Mr Youland took over his fathers farm, when his father joined Union forces in the Civil War. Upon his fathers return Mr Youland went to work at Farnsworth Mills in Lisbon Center learning the trade of weaving.
At age 21, Mr Youland persued a course of study at Dirigo Business College in Augusta , Maine.He worked at several mercantiles in Lewiston, Portland and Boston.Progressing from clerk to buyer for Bradford Peck's new store in Lewiston, Maine.In 1893 Mr Youland formed W.E.Youland & Co.on Main St, Biddeford, Maine.It became the largest dry goods store in York County.
Mr Youland was President of the Biddeford Board of Trade. He was prominant in Masonic circles and was on the Maine Council of Royal and Select Masters and the Bradford Commandery, Knights Templars. He was member of the Pilgram Fathers a Representative to the Supreme Colony.
He married Susan Teel 9 Oct 1881. They had three children and lived on the corners of Union and Graham Sts in Biddeford, Maine.
