Robert "Bob" Wooten, founder of Wooten's Marine, of Rocky Mount, passed away Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, after a brief illness. Bob was born in Wilson County to the late Ora Tolson and Waddell Wooten. He was educated in the Wilson County school system and Atlantic Christian College. In 1951, he married the former Joyce Williford of Wilson.

In 1952, they moved to Rocky Mount, where he worked as a draftsman for the ACL Railroad. After leaving the railroad, he served the City of Rocky Mount as a fireman. During these years, he had a small engine shop operating in his backyard. It soon became apparent that he would have to give one of these up. In 1957, he left the fire department to build his own small business, Wooten's Small Engines, later became Wooten's Small Engine and Marine, now known as Wooten's Marine Inc.

Being active in the community, he remained a volunteer fireman and was a Rocky Mount retired fireman. He served in several offices with the Rocky Mount Elks Lodge leading to Exalted Ruler. Bob was a regular member of the Breakfast Optimist until health issues forced him to retire. He held many offices in his business, and often said that his hardest job was doing nothing. He had an extensive love for both old cars and scooters, both of which he collected.

A member of First Christian Church of Rocky Mount, where he served in many chairs such as a Sunday school teacher, deacon, a member of CMF and the church's first Boy Scout leader. Since having a stroke in 1996, Bob was limited in his ability to finish some of his dreams. However, in these last few years he found the love of his church family, especially members of the "Outreach Sunday School Class" and the love of his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Tyler Hicks Wooten.

Bob is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joyce; two sons, Robbie and wife, Ennis, and Mike, both of Rocky Mount; three grandchildren, Justin of Wilmington and Lauren and Lindsey, both at North Carolina State University; two brothers, the Rev. William D. Wooten and wife, Elaine, of Spring Hills, Fla. and Thomas Ray Wooten of Raleigh; special sister-in-law, Jean Abbitt, of Wilson; and his beloved dog, "Joker."

The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. tonight, March 2, 2009, at Wheeler and Woodlief Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at First Christian Church, 1101 W. Haven Boulevard, Rocky Mount. Burial to follow at Maplewood Cemetery in Wilson.

Flowers are accepted or memorial contributions may be made in Bob's name to First Christian Church 1101 W. Haven Boulevard, Rocky Mount, NC 27803.
