The following short article appeared right below the obituary for James C. Earley...

Again, The Grim Reaper.

Mrs. J. O. Parks died suddenly at her home last evening, after returning from the funeral of her brother. She had been an invalid for some time past, and the death of Mr. Earley, leaving her the sole survivor of her family, brought on a collapse.

An obituary is deferred until the next issue of this paper.

A week later...

Mrs. Mattie E. Parks, wife of our townsmen, J. O. Parks, died at her home in Enumclaw last Thursday evening. Mrs. Parks had been an invalid for the past two years, but bore her affliction bravely. She was of a cheerful disposition and few realized the end was quite so near at hand. She was a bright and intelligent woman, her early vocation in life was teaching school. Deceased was born in Mt. Gilead, Ohio, 64 years ago and her girlhood days were spent in Keokuk, where she was educated, and in 1879 married J. O. Parks. Three children crowned their marriage, Ival, Oscar, and a little girl four years old, who died while they were in Kansas. Deceased also has a son, by a former marriage, residing in the east. Sixteen years ago Mrs. Parks with her family came west and for the past seven years has resided in Enumclaw where she became a member of the Mt. Peak Rebekah Lodge, and was a Past Grand. She was always active in lodge work until failing health prevented. Deceased has a large circle of friends who mourn her departure, remembering that a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a true friend has answered the summons of death. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the family residence, under auspices of the Rebekah Lodge, and amidst flowing tears and beautiful floral offerings the remains were laid to rest in Evergreen cemetery.
