Carl and Ethan Behm will wear their scout uniforms to the funeral Saturday for their grandfather, Don L. Behm Sr., who devoted much of his adult life to Boy Scouts before being restricted by diabetes.
"I thought that would be appropriate," said Jane Behm of Sharonville, whose husband of 51 years died Tuesday. He was 70.
Mrs. Behm said "scouting was his life" growing up in Seaman, a small Adams County town, east of Cincinnati.
About a year ago, he wrote 31 pages of notes on a legal pad about his 31 years associated with Boy Scouts, said his son, Don Behm II of West Chester Township, and father of Carl and Ethan.
He also filled several other legal pads with handwritten remembrances about growing up in Adams County and his work for Sycamore and Finneytown school districts.
The long-hand notes detail his troop's train trip in 1953 - when he was 12 - to the Boy Scout National Jamboree in Irvine, Calif., south of Los Angeles. At the amphitheater show, he saw Vice President Richard Nixon and Hollywood stars Marilyn Monroe, Bob Hope, Dorothy Lamour and Milton Berle.
"If I ever amounted to anything, I owe it all to scouting," he wrote.
Mr. Behm was an adult leader for a Blue Ash troop before his son was born in 1970, and switched to help Troop 485 in Sharonville.
After graduating from Morehead College (now Morehead State University), he taught geography, history and government in Sycamore schools for seven years, until 1970.
Then Mr. Behm served as Finneytown assistant principal for three years, before spending 17 years as district business manager. He retired in 1990.
While working at Finneytown 38 years ago, he was diagnosed with insulin-dependent Type 1 diabetes, his wife said.
"He was most proud of making that transition from classroom teacher to administrator," said his son, a Finneytown High School history teacher.
Mr. Behm purchased school buses, oversaw the food service and cafeteria operations, and even "walked the school roofs to make sure they weren't leaking or needed to be replaced,'' his son said.
In summer, Behm loved to vacation with his wife, son and two daughters, Michelle and Erica. He spent two years mapping out their 1987 trip to the Grand Canyon, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Salt Lake City.
Erica, who was born with congenital heart disease, died in 1991, at age 17, three years after a heart-transplant operation. Mr. Behm and his wife also had a daughter, Donna Jane, die as an infant in 1961.
Diabetes severely limited his activities the past 10 years, his wife said.
"I always prayed that Don would live along enough to know all of his grandkids, and he did," she said.
In addition to his wife and son, survivors include a daughter, Michelle Betz of Sharonville; a brother, John Behm of Brookville, Ohio; and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held noon Saturday at Springdale Church of the Nazarene, 11177 Springfield Pike, Springdale. Visitation is 10 a.m.-noon at the church. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in Springdale.
