Hays, Astor, age 84, of 2696 E. Co. Rd. 560-S, Everton, Ind., died on Friday, April 11, 2003, in the emergency room, at Fayette Memorial Hospital, Ind. He was under a doctor's care, but his death was unexpected. He was born Dec. 30, 1918, in Hindman, Ky., the youngest of eleven children of Nelson and Lucinda Smith Hayes. He had lived in Connersville, Ind., since 1946. He had served in the U.S. Army during World War II from May 1942 until August 1946, attaining the rank of sergeant in the 2nd Fighter Squadron and the 52nc Fighter Group. He saw action in several locations, including Sicily, Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Southern France, and was awarded several decorations and citations. he was employed at Philco-Ford for 31 years before retiring in 1980. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and hunting. He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers; and three sisters. Survivors include his wife, Roba Everidge Hayes, whom he married March 13, 1946, in Hazard, Ky,; two daughters and sons-in-law, Judy and Harold White of Connersville, Ky., and Debbie and Robin Campbell of Whiteland, Ind,; a brother, Lawrence Hayes of Detroit, Mich.; a sister, Alma Banks of Hindman, Ky.; and five grandchildren, Chris Campbell, Megan Campbell, Chad Campbell, Suzanne Griffin and Doug White; five great-grandchildren, Tyler White, Dillon White, Cody Campbell, April Griffin and Jeremy Griffin; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were conducted in Urban-Winkler Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Sanders of Calvary Baptist Church officiating. Burial with military graveside rites, conducted by the Fayette Co.
