Gen Páez was president of Venezuela from 1830 to 1835. Though not the "first president" he was the first president of an independent State of Venezuela following the break up of the Gran Colombia as set up by Simón Bolivar. In that era Venezuela was considered a Republic within the scheme of the Gran Colombia umbrella.
