In 1930 he, his mother, step-father, and three siblings lived on a farm they were renting for five dollars a month in Justice Precinct 8, Williamson County, TX. His step-father also worked as a truckster at Cedar Brake, and Martell as a laborer at Cedar Brake.

MANSFIELD, La. ---Services for Martell Mercer, 77, of Joaquin, who died Sunday in Mansfield, La. hospital, will be Wednesday at 4pm at Grimes Funeral Chapel with William Covey of Brady officiating. Burial will follow in Garden of Memories Cemetery. Born Nov 6, 1915 in Williamson County, Mr. Mercer was a self employed cedar merchant. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene. He married Edna Smith on Oct, 16, 1943 in San Marcos. She survives. Other survivors include five daughters, Geneva Baillargeon, Nancy Mercer, Vivian Holsington, Mary Joe Lindsey and Melinda Sue Mikesh, all of Kerrvill; nine sons, Walter Newton, Chester Lee, Billy Ray, James Roy, Larry Don, John Paul, Mart Christopher, Johnny Thomas and Jimmy Smith, all of Kerrville; four sisters, Annie Bell Brown of Ontario, Calif., Dorothy Blakman of Washington, and Virginia Poppino of Oregon; two brothers, Steve Jackson of San Marcos and Luther Jackson of Bastrop; 29 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Pallbearers will be James Mercer, Billy Mercer, Larry Mercer, G. W. Lindsey, Martin Mikest, and John Paul Mercer. Grimes Funeral Chapel in Kerrville is in charge of arrangements.
