The Rev. Joseph Newton Darnell, 90, many years A well-known Christian minister in Missouri, died last Thursday at the Boone County Hospital in Columbia. His funeral was held at 10 AM Saturday at the Christian church at Leeton Missouri and burial was in the King City Cemetery. Mr. Darnell was born July 2, 1877 near Morrison Tennessee the son of William Thomas and Margaret Bryan Darnell. He was educated at Adrian at Academy and College (now Texas Christian University) and the Bible school of the University of Kentucky. At the latter he met Nancy Young Ficklin, daughter of Thomas and Mary Young Ficklin, and they were married in the Ficklin home at Stanberry Missouri, May 22, 1907. Mrs. Darnell preceded him in death May 2, 1956. Mr. Darnell's first pastorate was at Russellville Kentucky. Later he served Missouri churches at Stanberry, Grant City, Slater, Fayette, Higginsville, Kearney, Knob Noster, Leeton and Willow Springs. He and Mrs. Darnell lived on a farm near Olathe Kansas several years and he served a two-year term in the Kansas Legislature as a representative from Johnson County. In retirement Mr. and Mrs. Darnell had lived at the Lutheran Good Shepherd nursing home at Concordia Missouri. Surviving are two sons, Dr. Thomas F. B. Darnell of Columbia Missouri, and Dr. J. Paul Darnell of Prairie Village Kansas; one daughter, Mrs. Margaret Tarwater of Raytown Missouri; nine grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
