DELTA - Fern Butterfield Rider, 88, died Sunday, May 31, 2009 in Delta. Fern was born May 27, 1921 in Olathe, Colo. to Rolla and Eva Butterfield. She graduated in 1939 from Olathe High School. Fern is survived by her husband of 62 years, Charles Rider. She is also survived by a sister, Arlene McLaren, of Milledgeville, Ga., and a brother, Bill and wife, Phyllis Butterfield, of Olathe. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rolla and Eva Butterfield, and two brothers, Bob and Laverne Butterfield.
Fern first worked at Woolworths in Montrose. She moved to Grand Junction to work at Montgomery Wards where she met her husband, Charles. Fern worked at Litton Mayflower before becoming secretary and bookkeeper for their own business, Western Transfer North American Van Lines, for a number of years.
Fern and Charles began married life on a farm in Fruita and later moved to Grand Junction. They moved to Montrose for 10 years before moving to Delta 20 years ago.
Fern loved fishing and going on picnics, and in her earlier years, gardening. Many enjoyed the "fruit" of her labors with her delicious preserves. She enjoyed arts and crafts. Fern was a great communicator with her many letters and beautiful poems she composed.
A visitation was held on Wednesday, June 3, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Crippin Funeral Home Chapel in Montrose. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, June 4, at 3 p.m., at Grand View Cemetery in Montrose. Arrangements are under the direction of Crippin Funeral Home & Crematory, 802 E.
