Killed at the batttle of Trevillians. Soldier, scholar, gentleman. Joseph McAllister was a wealthy and well respected rice planter. He was a useful citizen, charitable to the poor and kind to all. He made a dashing soldier and was a true patriot. His grandfather, Archibald,and great-grandfather, Richard were both officers in the Revolutionary War. His father was George Washington McAllister. In 1862 Joseph formed a company of mounted infantrymen named the "Hardwick Mounted Rifles". It became part of the 7th Georgia Cavalry. McAllister was a natural leader of men and was held in high esteem by those who served under him. He was promoted and became commander of the 7th Georgia Cavalry. The battle of Trevillian Station resulted in heavy losses for both sides. The 7th lost nearly half of the 600 engaged, including Lieutenant Colonel Joseph L. McAllister. He cried out to his men, "Strike for God and our native land."
