Charles served as a Staff Sergeant on B-17F #42-5080, 335th Bomber Squadron, 95th Bomber Group, U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

He resided in Erie County, New York and was a member of the New York National Guard prior to the war.

His National Guard unit was called into full time active Army service on October 15, 1940, prior to the war, from Buffalo, New York. He was noted, at that time, as being employed as a Kitchen worker and also as Single, without dependents.

Charles died in the "Line Of Duty" when his B-17 crashed during a training mission in South Dakota during the war.
