|Birth: ||Apr. 26, 1916|
|Death: ||May 13, 2008|
Edythe Melton Waggoner Atherton passed away peacefully in her home, surrounded by her family and her dear friend and longtime caregiver, Verna Walker, in the early morning hours of Tuesday, May 13, 2008.
The friends who knew her best often called her by her nickname "Happy." Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren called her "Nanny."
She was preceded in death by her parents, Chester and Lela Melton; one sister, Geraldine Wiggins; one brother, Paul Melton; her first husband, Cliff Waggoner of Niagara; her second husband, Otis Atherton of Mountain Home, Ark.; and her beloved son, Tadd Glen Waggoner of San Francisco.
She will be celebrated and remembered by a large family and an even larger group of friends, including her daughter, Evalyn Waggoner Champion of Niagara; two grandchildren, Ronda Champion Carroll and Steve Champion and his wife, Lori; five great-grandchildren, Rose and Adam Malchow and Katie, Libby, and Bobby Champion; one sister, Juanita Blevins; dozens of cousins, nieces, nephews, and other wonderful family members.
Edythe worked as a dress designer for the CBS Dress Factory for many years. She also owned and operated Edythe's Fashions and Fabrics on Franklin Street, where she taught countless numbers of ladies to sew. We have been told on any number of occasions how she had helped with a prom or wedding dress for a special young lady who could not afford anything else. To those who knew Happy, they will understand that she received far more joy from the giving of those dresses than the value of the materials or work involved. This is just one example of what made her "Happy."
She was blessed with a peaceful end to a long and wonderful life. Her daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were able to spend many happy days with her on the family farm during her last years. We were blessed by our dear Happy and wish for her friends and family to gather and help us celebrate her life Saturday at Rudy-Rowland Funeral Home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rudy-Rowland Funeral Home. Dr. Hollis Marshall will officiate. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call after 9 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to St. Anthony's Hospice.
We feel blessed by her peaceful passing and grateful for the time we shared.
We love you, Edythe, and will always remember you.
