1st Lieutenant Gardner was the pilot of U.S. Army Air Corps B-24E Liberator #42-7019, serving with the 330th Bomb Group, 458th Bomb Squadron. He was one of seven airmen killed in the crash of the bomber near the airfield at Alamogordo Army Air Base, New Mexico.
