Eva (Ewa) was born to George and Anna Cieślar in Silesia (at either Berlitz/Bielitz/Bielsko, or Vistula/Wisła -- accounts vary), then in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, now in Poland.
She married Paul Yanik (Paweł Janik) in 1901 in Vistula, Austria-Hungary. Paweł
was headmaster and teacher at a school in Vistula. They are known to have had four children:
* a girl who died shortly before her father died, both in 1906
* Paweł/Paul
* Helen L. and
* Carl Boyce.
In 1910 she immigrated to the US. She returned in 1914 and took Helen and Carl to live with her in southern Idaho. Oldest son Paweł/Paul stayed and lived with an aunt and her family. The plan was to return for Paul later, but the world war began and kept Eva from getting back to Europe.
She married Frank J. Swoboda/Sobotka on Aug. 6, 1912 at Pocotello, ID. They lived in Michigan for some time, where they owned a grocery store. She also ran a summer resort hotel. She divorced him in 1934.

By 1959 she had moved to Salt Lake City, which is where her son Carl was living, and was no longer using Frank's last name.
