Paul Addison Rickard, 80, of Painted Post, New York, died Tuesday, July 22, 2003, at Bethany Manor Nursing Facility, Horseheads, NY, where he had been a resident since October 2002.
Born December 20, 1922, in Kaylong/Maggie, WV, he was the son of the late Adam Rickard of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Ada Pearl (Morrison) Rickard of New Haven, WV. He married Mary L Fry on June 14, 1944, and she passed away on January 6, 1993.
Paul was a 1942 graduate of Point Pleasant High School, Point Pleasant, WV. Prior to graduation from high school, Paul began working for Home Telephone Company in New Haven, as an installer. In 1946, he spent a year in Germany as an Army Communication Specialist. Upon returning to the states in 1947, he continued working for the phone company which was bought by Continental Telephone. He was transferred to Contel's office in St. Mary's, WV, in 1971, to work as a telephone engineer and in 1978 he was transferred to Selinsgrove, PA. He retired in 1983 after 43 years of service. In 1999, he relocated to Painted Post with his daughter, Sharon.
Paul was a member of the Shamokin Dam United Methodist Church and was very active in the administrative boards of the local church. He was a volunteer with The Mustard Seed Thrift Shop Program and Meals on Wheels Program in Selinsgrove. Paul was also very active with the Lions Club in New Haven before moving out of the area.
Paul is survived by two daughters and sons-in-laws: Sharon F and Jeff Girton, and Debra K and David Hungate; four grandchildren, Jennifer Girton, Jeremy Girton, Michelle (Eddie) Atkinson, and Joseph (Amanda) Hungate; one great-granddaughter, Kristin Nicole Atkinson; one sister Mary (Gerald) Beers; one brother, Donald C (Naomi) Rickard; one sister-in-law, Betty Rickard; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and his wife, he is preceded in death by an infant daughter, Paula Louise Rickard, in 1958; four brothers, Ralph Rickard in 1933, Roland Rickard in 1944, James Robert Rickard in 1972, and Ronald Harold Rickard in 2001.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 26, 2003, at the Foglesong-Tucker Funeral Home in Mason, WV, with Pastor Mike Lambert and Pastor Eddie Atkinson officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Graham Cemetery, New Haven, immediately following the service. Friends may call on the family from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
