Obituary:
William H. Briggs
Died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A.A. Bard living near Ryde, on Friday morning at the advanced age of 84 years, 6 months and 10 days. Mr. Briggs lived for many years in Germany Valley, this county, at the occupation of farming. There remain of his children: Mrs. Jno. Edleblute of Huntingdon; Mrs. Dessie Tweed of Bellwood who is just convalescing from the smallpox and was therefore unable to attend the funeral; Mrs. Tillie Bard of Ryde; William A. of Pittsburgh; B.H. of Punxsutawney; J.H. of Tyrone; Thos. G. of Burnt Cabins; and B.B. of Bellwood. The deceased had just been on a visit to his daughter, Mrs. Edleblute, of Warm Springs avenue, and left on Sunday, desiring to go to Mrs. Bard's at Ryde, saying that he was going to die, and strange to say, his premonition was soon to be realized. The funeral occurred yesterday, at the house at 10 o'clock with interment at Dunkard church, Germany Valley. He was for many years a member of the Presbyterian church of Mt. Union and his pastor, Rev. Kohler of that place officiated a the obsequies. His five sons and one son-in-law acted as pall-bearers. Mr. Briggs moved his family from Tell township, where he had resided about fifteen years after marriage, to Shirley township, and for many years followed his profession, that of farmer, on the farm now owned by H.B. Etnier, at the mouth of the Aughwick creek. Later he moved to a farm in the lower end of Germany Valley where he continued the occupation of which he was a thorough master, until the death of his wife, which occurred 20 years ago this coming January. Shortly after the death of his companion he retired from farming and made his home principally with his two youngest daughters, Mrs. Edelblute and Mrs. Bard. For many years he had suffered greatly at times from asthma, otherwise he was a man of strong constitution. Mr. Briggs, though in his usual health, appeared to realize the end of his earthly career was near at hand. On Sabbath, No. 30th, he told Mr. Edelblute and family that he must go to Mr. Bard's that day, stating that he was going to die and had some business matters that he must attend to at once. He could not be persuaded to remain at Huntingdon even until Monday, and in order to satisfy him Mr. Edelblute accompanied him to the home of his son-in-law, Mr. Alfred A. Bard, near Ryde. Once there he was perfectly satisfied, and in arranging matters pertaining to his death requested that his sons act as pall-bearers.
