Flowers left for James Caveney
Ike, I've always been so proud of you, my one tie to MLB and the great old PCL. My three sons carry on the pride and memories.Ike was my father's (Hubert Caveney) first cousin. Here's one memory some may not know. Told to me by an uncle who saw him play (Kenneth Malovos): during his playing days (PCL, pre-MLB I think, but not sure), he wore no glove playing short stop. A rule was imposed that all players had to wear a glove. Ike said he couldn't 'feel' the ball with a glove, so he cut a big hole in the palm of the glove, so the ball would still strike his bare hand.Other notes: I have a copy of Ike's pamphlet, published after his playing days, "The Baseball Merry-Go-Round" (which Joe DiMaggio signed for me some years ago). And when I visited the MLB Hall of Fame in the late '80's, Ike's picture was there, part of an exhibit on Joe DiMaggio. I also got a complete set of the (few) documents the HoF had on Ike, mostly contract negotiation letters, because they offer them to any relatives of MLB players.STTL
