Flowers left for Alfred Torbert
Brevet Major General Torbert, I thank you for your fine and outstanding service. You emerged from the Civil War with a fine record as a combat commander and a Brevet Major Generalcy in the regular army. Despite your fine record, you were not offered a promotion in the post civil war u.s. army and faced the prospect of continuing your service in the army as a mere Captain, a rank to which you had been promoted in 1861. I don't blame you a bit for choosing to resign your commission after your services during the war were basically forgotten. I for one applaud you for your gallantry, and hope that General of the Armies George Washington will confer upon you a higher regular army rank on that grand parade ground in the sky. Rest easy.
