Thomas Boles (1837-1905) - Find a Grave Memorial

U.S. Congressman. He taught school for several years, was Sheriff of Yell County in 1858 and deputy clerk of the circuit court of Yell County, (1859-60). He studied law; was admitted to the bar in 1860, commenced practice in Danville, Arkansas and served as a Captain in Company E, 3rd Regiment, Arkansas Volunteer Cavalry, Union Army, during the Civil War. After the war, he was judge of the fourth judicial circuit, (1865-68). In 1868, he was elected as a Republican to the Fortieth Congress, reelected to the Forty-first Congress and successfully contested the election of John Edwards to the Forty-second Congress, serving until 1873. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law, was appointed receiver of the land office at Dardanelle by President Hayes in 1878 and was United States Marshal for the western district of Arkansas, (1881-89). He was clerk of the United States Circuit Court for the Eighth Judicial Circuit from 1897, until his death at age 67.
