Don Carlos Buell was hailed as the "Hero of Shiloh." Below is some additional information on this amazing Major General. SERVICE: Don Carlos Buell was born March 23, 1818, in Ohio. As an infant, Buell’s father passed away, thus, Don Carlos Buell moved to Indiana where he lived with his uncle. In 1841, Buell graduated from West Point, and he served valiantly during the Mexican-American War. In 1861, when the Civil War erupted, General-in-chief, George B. McClellan, appointed Buell to train soldiers in the Army of the Potomac. Later, Buell was transferred to serve as a general in the Army of the Ohio. Buell and his troops arrived at Pittsburg Landing (Shiloh), Tennessee, on the night of the 6th of April, 1862. Buell and the soldiers from the Army of the Ohio fought at the Battle of Shiloh’s infamous sites, such as Duncan Field, near the Sunken Road. Don Carlos Buell was relieved of his command after he failed to follow-up the Confederate retreat after the Battle of Perryville. When U.S. Grant became leader of the Union Army in 1864, he requested that Buell return to military service. However, Buell declined, saying that he did not want to serve under men who he had previously commanded. LATER LIFE: After the Civil War, Don Carlos Buell moved to Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, where he lived at Airdrie (near Paradise, Kentucky). In the mid 1880s, Buell worked with the United States pension office. It is said that Buell was often seen wearing his uniform and riding his horse, Shiloh, to and from town to receive/send his mail. Buell loved to wear hats, and he enjoyed gardening. Buell passed away November 19, 1898, and he is buried at the Bellefontaine Cemetery, in Saint Louis, Missouri.
