MI Detachment, 2nd Bn., 5th SFG (Abn.)
He was a military intelligence officer in his 10th year of service. He participated in contingency operations in Somalia, Haiti, Jordan, Kuwait, Kosovo and throughout Southwest Asia. He was killed by friendly fire when an Air Force B-52 dropped a one-ton bomb near the soldiers after they had called in an airstrike against Taliban forces. Cody is remembered for paying attention to details, taking time to polish every medal on his uniform. He also had to have the largest truck, the largest TV and he always had to have the right tool for the job - they loved him at Home Depot. Cody's funeral was held at Hillcrest Memorial Park, Bakersfield, California and his body was then flown to Virginia for burial at Arlington National Cemetery. There is a West Coast memorial on the Hill of Valor in a Bakersfield cemetery. After Cody died, everyone in the family placed a memento in the memorial niche. There is a treasured baseball. It commemorated a game in Cody's senior year in high school when his shoulder popped out of alignment and his dad jammed it back into its socket between innings. Despite the pain, Cody hit a homer his next time at bat.
