Rev. Eli Stedman married Mary "Polly" Gates, December 5th, 1798 in Tunbridge, VT. They came to Ohio in 1804, locating in Belpre, Washington county, but removed to Leading creek the next year. Rev. Stedman was a Free Will Baptist preacher.
The first church in Rutland was organized in February, 1810, by Revs. Eli Steadman and James J. Greene; and the first postoffice in Rutland township was at Rev. Eli Stedman's résidence. He aided in a number of powerful revivals and the Athens Quarterly Meeting was formed, was a man possessing good talents, an impressive speaker, and very influential. He had charge of this church in Meigs County Ohio for several years.

From (Larkin: Pioneer History of Meigs Co)The Freewill Baptist organized quite early (in Meigs Co).  The first preaching was at Nathan BURRIS' house and next by Rev. Eli STEDMAN at Samuel BRANCH's house. {Eli Stedman and Samuel Branch were brothers in law and both Freewill Baptist preachers. Later Samuel's son Sam'l S Branch was a preacher also.... The first school house was built on Samuel BRANCH's land (note: a mile north of Chester village. It was a log cabin.) Those families from the New England states brought their ideas of education with them and until they could have a common school they would work hard by day and teach their children in the evening.
After the death of his first wife, Rev. Stedman married second to Zelpha Hubbell, widow of Capt. Anthony Van Sickle, a War of 1812 Veteran. Eli and Zelpha Stedman had three children:
