Casper was a wild, free spirited cat who hated being a inside cat. The bus riding kitty became famous when he attracted world-wide media attention in 2009 when it was reported that he was a regular bus commuter in Plymouth in Devon, England. He appeared on BBC News, was the subject of a newspaper editorial in The Guardian, and had a book written about him, Casper the Commuting Cat.

He would catch the same bus every day for four years. He hopped on the bus around 10am every morning and sat on the back seat throughout its entire 11 mile route. He took his daily rides for so long that all First Bus drivers were told to look out for him to ensure he got off at the right stop.

Casper got him name because he had a habit of vanishing like a ghost. His owner and caretaker got the silly kitty from a rescue centre in 2002 and drivers say he started riding the bus in 2005. Sadly, Casper died on 14 January 2010 after being hit by a hit-and-run-driver in a taxi as he tried to board the No3 service. He died of his injuries before Mrs. Finden could get him to the vet. Devastated owner Susan Finden, 65, said whoever ran over her cat failed to stop and help him.

Mrs Finden said that despite his regular bus rides Casper had 'no road sense whatsoever'. Susan believes Casper may have begun life at a haulage yard as he was so fond of large vehicles.

A spokesman for First Bus added: 'He'd just curl up at the back of the bus. He never caused any trouble.'
