Michael was co-Valedictorian of the Class of 1999 Bonner Springs High School, Bonner Springs, Kansas. He graduated Kansas State University with honors in 2003. His church home was Rehms Park Baptist Church in Bonner Springs, Kansas.

Michael was killed when an assailant climbed on top of his tank and shot through the open hatch. Also killed in the attack was Spc. Mark Anthony Zapata.
