Mr. Black ~ our neighborhood cat.

Dear Old Cat,

Your name first appears on my calendar notes in February 1999 when we had arranged for your "socially-responsible" operation. You were already a young adult as we started our part in your veterinary care and feeding. We are estimating your age to be somewhere between 15 and 17 years.

You were always friendly, and had a sweet attitude, even though life for you was not easy.

You took turns staying at various households. Summertime, you would sleep on our covered front porch on the rug I placed on the bench for you. Other nights would find you across the street on the cushioned chairs, sheltered by our neighbor's covered porch. In the winter you had a cozy sleeping spot under that same house, or you would use the snug retreat I had made from a waxed cardboard box, lined with brown bags and newspaper for insulation, then fitted with fuzzy blankets.

You made your rounds for food at several cat friendly houses, and experienced a variety of dry food flavors, but it was at our house where you could depend on canned food, which you very much appreciated.

Our porches and benches were where you would sit with us outside, taking turns with each of your individual mentors, sharing your company with us all.

I would always watch for you when I came home from work, and you would listen for the sound of my car. I would see you raise your little black head and by the time I pulled into the driveway, you were crossing the street to meet me.

Eventually, you developed the very painful oral inflammatory mouth disease of Stomatitis. Your teeth were falling out, and we were advised to have the few left, removed. That treatment, along with Cortisone injections, gave you much relief. But those shots must be limited because of the adverse side effects. When troubles began again, we took you to a 2nd Vet Hospital. There you were seen by a veterinarian who had attended a seminar concerning feline oral disease. He started you on a regimen in 2007, which was like a miracle treatment. You were able to live those final 4 years without an inflamed mouth.

The last 52 days of your life, you were in our house with a warm bed, an abundance of food and water, lots of brushing and pets, and no worries. We successfully treated your ear infection, and learned that you had heart disease. Those days passed swiftly and 51 of them were very good. We knew we had to say goodbye when you were in distress that last morning & afternoon. Your appointment was made, then we took you to your very caring doctor. We stayed with you, talking, touching, and petting, as you closed your eyes in final sleep.

Our neighborhood is not the same for us. Something special is missing - it is you, good old cat...Mr. Black.

ONE of my favorite messages: "What a special fella you were Mr. Black. Spreading joy all around the neighborhood and being cared for so lovingly in your last days."
