65-year-old grandfather of four, was one of three people killed in a massive pileup on Interstate 94 in Michigan City, Ind. Thursday. More than 45 vehicles were involved in the pileup, which also left more than 20 people injured, two of them critically.

He loved his family and spending time together outside. Thursday's crash happened as he was on his way to a second home in LePorte, Ind. – a house he used as a home base for boating trips with his wife, his four children and four grandchildren.

He also loved walking his 7-year-old black Labrador Sparky along the lake when he was at the house. The dog was with him in the car and also died.

He loved music, and as with everything he did, he loved sharing it with others.

In the 1970s, the lifelong Chicagoan spent years as a high school band director. Decades after a switch into banking, he continued playing the organ every Sunday for his South Side church.

"He loved life, and he loved boating, and he loved the outdoors.
