CHERRYVILLE - Jim Allran's long career as Gaston County attorney began abruptly.

Mount Holly attorney Max Childers said he "was sworn in as an attorney one day, and tried a capital case that same day." Childers said the newly sworn lawyer kept his client from the death penalty.

Judge William James Allran Jr, a Cherryville city attorney and county judge whose career spanned more than 40 years, died April 30, 1991, at Carolina Care Center in Cherryville after a long illness. He was 70.

"He was always a very successful man, and a real good friend," said Childers, who had known Judge Allran since law school at UNC-Chapel Hill. "He always had a good story to tell."

After UNC, where he was a Phi Beta Kappa, Judge Allran served as an Army major in WWII. The Gaston County native began his law practice in September 1948 and was appointed Gaston County's judge of domestic relations and juvenile court in 1953. He served for 15 years and then for 1 1/2 years as chief district judge. In 1972 he began a practice with his son, Jim Allran III, that continued as Allran & Allran until his retirement in 1985.

"He was a friendly, compassionate man and very confident, capable lawyer," said Mrs J C "Bill" Hayes, Judge Allran's secretary for eight years.

He was Cherryville city attorney from 1954 until failing health recently forced him to withdraw from an active role. Judge Allran also was a director of Southern National Bank and Cherryville Federal Savings and Loan. He was inducted into the Cherryville Hall of Fame in 1988.

The funeral is 3 pm Friday at First Baptist Church in Cherryville, with the Revs Daniel Featherstone, Perry Holleman and Mike Minnix officiating. Burial with full Masonic rites is in Cherryville City Memorial cemetery. Visitation is 7 to 9 tonight at Carpenter's Funeral Home.

Judge Allran was the son of the late William and Lola Houser Allran. Survivors are his wife, Sadie Elizabeth Allen Allran; son, daughter, Mrs Sadie Broome; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild.

Memorials may be made to the organization of the donor's choice.
