Attached are records for John Hogg/Hoag's birth in Boston in 1643. Also the marriage record of John's parents, Richard and Joane Hoag/Hogg/Hogge married in Boston 1637. The family story states his father Richard returned to England to receive an inheritance, and the son John remained as a "bonded" worker until he came of age. On April 21, 1669 John married Ebenezer Emery (1648-1691), daughter of John and Alice Grantham Emery. John Emery was one of the founding fathers of Newbury, Massachusetts.
John Hoag was noteworthy as a County Magistrate who stood against the witch hysteria of the late 17th Century in Essex County, Massachusetts. He lost his position for this outspokenness. A Hoag Family history says this:
"John Hoag was a man of fine natural abilities and filled the place of Side Judge in the County Court until the accusations and arrests of folk for witchcraft which he opposed with such steadfastness and resolution that he lost his seat."
John Hoag's sons are mentioned in Judge Sewell's diary of 1704, "of ye profaneness of ye young Hoags professing that heresy" (Quakers) The Hoag line continued as Quakers for many years to come, immigrating to the Oblong in Dutchess County New York and beyond. John Hoag did eventually become a member of the Society of Friends, to the great consternation of his wife. But even she became convinced after a "sign" is given to her from beyond the grave. There is a detailed account of this story by John & Ebenezer's second Great Grandson, the "Quaker Prophet" Joseph Hoag (1762-1846), in the published journal of his life.
