On June 3, 1968, 3rd Battalion, 1st Marines loaded onto Task Force 76.5 ships and prepared for Operation Swift Saber. The operation was planned for the period June 7 to June 14. The operational area was 10 miles northwest of Da Nang in an area known as "Elephant Valley"a narrow river plain between some of the steepest mountains in I Corps. This area was also a known enemy infiltration route into Quang Nam Province. On June 11, 1968, while in active support of this USMC operation, Ray Templeton, Conrad Lehrman and Glen Zamorski were KIA in a Friendly Fire Incident as a result of the an artillery mission supporting troops in the Elephant Valley near Da Nang in an operation named "Swift Saber" . They and their families were denied the honor of receiving the Purple Heart for their sacrifice. Lt. Dan T. Jones was the sole survivor of the incident and spent many months in recovery after surviving the inverted Helicopter crash on the beach. ~~~~~~~~~~~~Requiem~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~"These Marines have all unselfishly acquitted themselves with the greatest distinction, and should not be denied their due recognition from a grateful people and government for their sacrifice in the service of that country while combat action for their nation." "Not for fame or reward, not for place or for rank, not lured by ambition or goaded by necessity, but in simple obedience to duty as they understood it. They suffered all, sacrificed all, dared all, and died." Rest in peace, Lieutenant Zamorski.
