Fatal Injury in Cycle Mishap
A motorcycle accident near Kernville proved fatal to a young Mojave man, and his passenger is hospitalized with major injuries.
The California Highway Patrol in Bakersfield reported that Charles Todd Thomas, 18, Mojave, and his passenger, John Frances Nabonne, 16, 15003 La Salle, Gardena, were northbound on Sierra Way above Kernville near Brush Creek.
Thomas was driving the 1972 cycle, and went into a curve at an excessive speed. He hit the brakes and skidded 35 feet off of the road and into the creek where he hit a rock. Officers at the scene reported that they found his helmet strapped to the bike. Thomas was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital in Kernville.
Thomas was employed at the Safeway store in Mojave, and had graduated from Mojave High School in June.

Funeral services for Charles Todd.Thomas, 18, will be held in the Stickel Mortuaries Chapel in Mojave on Friday, August 25. .
The 1972 graduate of Mojave High was killed in a motorcycle accident near the town of Kernville on Aug. 22. He was born March 8, 1954, and was a life long resident of Mojave. Charles worked as a box boy at the local Safeway store.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and 'Mrs. Vernon L. Thomas at the home at 15350 Leslie Street., three brothers, Larry and Michael, Mojave; and Vernon, Cheyenne, Wyo. ; and three sisters, Pat Archer, Cheyenne, Wyo.; Phillis Nash and Pamela Beyington, both of Mojave. Also surviving is his grandmother Pearl Thomas of Delano.
Mr. L. R. Gerbitz of Jehovah's Witnesses will officiate at the 10 a.m. services. Interment will be in the Mojave Cemetery. Stickel Mortuaries have charge of arrangements.
