Dear Mr. Stanton, after reading about your life, your service to our beloved 16th president and to our country, I shall always believe you were hand-picked by God alone to be in that place at that time (the Civil War). You were exactly who Abraham Lincoln needed to achieve great things.Thank you, thank you.

What a complex man. You worked for 2 crooks - Cameron & Sickles yet you were honest and fought the corruption in giving military contracts. How we could use a man such as yourself w/ our current administration & no bid contracts.

It has often been said that "the times make the man," but in your case, well, you mastered your times and did it well, and in so doing shaped history itself. But for your advent in senior most levels of national government, its coffers might have run completely bare, and thus the hard fought for prize of freedom would have no doubt been lost for millions whose very lives depended upon you. Hard times produced hardened men, and you were indeed a diamond of a fine among those who shaped the history of our country during those incredible times.

It reaches out for all to see, it is too late to mourn. You did not know I would exist, you died and I was born. Yet each of us are part of you, in flesh, in blood, in bone, And in my breast there beats a pulse entirely not my own. Dear ancestor, the space you left those many years ago Is filled today by all of us, who would have loved you so. I wonder if you laughed and loved, I wonder if you knew That someday I would find this place and come to visit you. *Anonymous
