Our sweet Abby was among the huge number of ferrets in an Ohio surrender in 2007. Between 750 and 1,000 ferrets were living in the most horrible conditions, owned by a breeder who without conscience continued to breed the ferrets and keep them in cramped outdoor cages that provided no warmth or shelter.
They were exposed to snow, rain and freezing Ohio wind, the drinking water frozen solid as well as the food. None of the ferrets were neutered, spayed or vaccinated, none knew any human kindness or compassion until this place was shut down and the ferrets rescued in a cooperative effort by shelters and volunteers all over the country.
Our local ferret rescue was among those that took some of the little ones, which is how Abby came to be adopted into our family when she was just a wee baby.
It's hard to describe what Abby means to us. A few months ago she developed a condition that left her back legs paralyzed, but it was as though she never even noticed...her sunny spirit and playful nature didn't change, and she trundled about with her weaker parts in tow. She took meds that helped keep her stable, and I emptied her bladder when she needed to pee. All this she patiently accepted, wrapping her little arms around mine to come to Mommy and give me kisses. We knew how this illness would end, though, and over the weekend she became acute. I held her the better part of a day making sure she experienced no discomfort and knew I was there loving her.
It's a hard, hard thing, Abbykins...

"We who choose to surround ourselves with lives even more temporary than our own live within a fragile circle , easily and often breached.
Unable to accept its awful gaps, we still would live no other way.
We cherish memory as the only certain immortality, never fully
understanding the necessary plan..."

from the book, Separate Lifetimes
"The Once and Again Prince"
by Irving Townsend.
