Solomon Futch, Sr. was born about 1767 in New Hanover County, North Carolina, the son of Revolutionary War veteran Onesimus Futch, Sr. and Anne Dukes Futch. He had eight siblings. His first wife was Elizabeth Salety "Lety" Cook Futch, and they had eleven children: John Futch, Thomas Futch, Elizabeth Futch Mattox, Jacob Futch, Isaac Futch, Sarah Ann Futch Driggers Baxter, Margaret Mary Ann Futch Duggar, Solomon Futch, Jr., Rowan Futch, Samuel Futch, and Delilah Futch Strickland. His second wife was Sarah Ann "Sally" Davis Futch, and they had thirteen children: Mary Futch, Zachariah Futch, Sevitity Futch, Nancy Futch Strickland, Sarah Futch Glisson, Catherine Futch, Salety Futch, Susannah A. Futch Glisson, Solomon Futch, Jr., Mary Futch, Ardelia Futch Shuman, John Futch, and James Futch. Solomon Futch, Sr. died July 21, 1836 at about age 69 in Bulloch County, Georgia and was probably buried in an unmarked grave in the Red Hill Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery in Bulloch County, near his wives. Solomon's ancestry was German, and the original spelling of his surname was Fuchs. In German "Fuchs" means "Fox."

From JoAnn Hagans Harris: From the will of Solomon Futch: “Pages 73-76, 14 Jan. 1839; 26 Jan. and 290 Jan. 1839; R. 14 Sept. 1847. The following signed as having received their share of the estate of SOLOMON FUTCH, dec'd.: SAMUEL FUTCH; SARAH FUTCH; JACOB FUTCH; THOMAS FUTCH (three shares); THOMAS HARDY (three shares); RICHARD STRICKLAND; ZACHARIAH FUTCH. witnesses to various receipts: CHARLES ZETTEROWER, JOSEPH BATES, WILLIAM ROWE, ADAM JONES, ABEL LEE, J.B. WRIGHT, J.P. WILLIAM DUGGER also received a share.”

From Judy Annis: "Mrs. Lawrence M. Edwards of Savannah, GA sent a correction to Huxford's Pioneers of Wiregrass GA, printed in Vol. 6, p. 334, stating that an unrecorded marriage license had been found in the Ordinary's Office. The License was dated March 18 1836 [1816?] Bulloch, GA for Solomon Futch and Sarah Davis. The license was recorded on 25 February 1967 in Marriage Book 2-A, p. 16." Their marriage license was not officially recorded for more than 150 years after their marriage!

Thanks so much to the late Joy Blankenship and all the Futch family genealogists for much of this information and especially to John Wise and Alfred Chassereau. Any errors, however, are mine alone. Please go to the "edit" link on this site with any corrections or additions.
