Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He served during the Civil War first as Captain and commander of Company B, 46th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, then as Colonel and commander of the 142nd Illinois Volunteer Infantry. He was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 15, 1865 for "faithful and meritorious services" during the war.
