American Photographer - Mr. Schatt died Saturday, May 4, 2002 in his Manhattan home from congestive heart failure. He was 92. Schatt served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
"Who was Roy Schatt?
Roy Schatt trained at New York City's High School of Commerce and the New York Art Students' League. He studied under N.C. Wyeth and directed the Washington, D.C. office of Warner Brothers' art department. He illustrated many government books and painted many murals. He was a radio announcer and actor, and he served in World War II by drawing maps and charts for the troops as well as creating murals for military clubs.
After working for the WPA, he took up photography. This medium gave Schatt global fame as he is known for photographs of Sidney Poitier, Marilyn Monroe, Billie Holiday, Paul Newman, Rod Steiger, and most famously, the 'Walking' series and 'Torn Sweater' series of his close friend James Dean.
His photographic style was to capture the unguarded moment of his sitter. He sought truth before glamour, and therefore his style of photography was similar to that of 'method' acting.
The same aspect of Schatt's style can be seen in his artistic interpretation of 'Harvesting Tobacco.' When he visited Columbus County [North Carolina] to create the mural, he painted his perception of what was going on before him in the tobacco fields. This truth is reflected in the figures of 'Harvesting Tobacco' hard at work together for the survival of the community." Source: 954 MAG, Fall & Winter Edition, p. 62, Whiteville, NC

Roy Schatt is World Famous for his series of photographs of actor James Dean, most notable being the 'Torn Sweater' photos. The photographs were taken before Dean became a star.

In 1991, he sued the James Dean Foundation after photos from a 1982 book of his images turned up on posters, calendars, and fridge magnets. He received a $200,000 payment.

Jan 10, 2006, The Lowe Gallery in Santa Monica featured some great photographs from Roy Schatt and James Dean in a show called 'The Mirrored Psyche.'
