Ruth Earleen Smith was born July 10, 1908 in Etowah County, Alabama. She is the daughter of Delia Harris Evans Smith Gilliland (Dec. 08, 1872 AL - Jan. 16, 1962 AL) and her second husband, Andy J. "A.J." Smith.

Ruth Earleen Smith O'Barr Lee Barclay's third husband, Roy Hilt Barclay, added the error to Ruth's obituary, that she was a native of Jefferson Co, AL. Ruth Earleen Smith was born in Etowah County, Alabama, as he did not know where she was born.

After, her Father, Andy J. "A.J." Smith married Delia Harris Evans (widow of Henry C. Evans)on May 19, 1907 in Gadsden, Etowah County, Alabama, they lived in the home that had belonged to Delia Harris Evans and her first husband, Henry C. Evans , which was located at 1402 North 4th Street, Attalla, Etowah County, Alabama. This is the home were Ruth Earleen Smith and her half siblings, Cecil Reed Evans, Willie Florence Evans, and Marcus Leo Evans, all lived in when they were growing up.

Gilliland on Nov. 29, 1917 in Etowah County, Alabama and they lived for the rest of their lives in the home that owned by Delia Harris Evans Smith Gilliland, located at 1402 North 4th Street, Attalla, Etowah County, Alabama. Delia Harris Evans (Dec. 08, 1872 AL - Jan. 16, 1962 AL) and Thomas Oliver "T.O." Gilliland (Oct. 21, 1860 AL - Oct. 03, 1935 AL) did not have any children together by their marriage.

Between the 1930 and 1940 census Ruth obtained her Cosmetologist License and started working at a Beauty Shop in downtown Attalla, AL. In the 1940 Census, Ruth and Roy Hilt Barclay are living in her Mother's home and Henry Daniel "Dan" O'Barr and their son, Thomas "Tom" D. O'Barr are living with Henry's Mother, Elizabeth Strickland O'Barr Houge "Mama Houge".

Aunt Ruth was a Cosmetologist and had a Beauty Shop on Fourth Street in downtown Attalla, AL for many years until she retired. Aunt Ruth was a devoted and active working member of the Northside Baptist Church and she made, with in her lifetime, substantial contributions to the Northside Baptist Church (which at that time located across the street from Ruth's Mother's home on North Fourth St. Attalla, AL). Aunt Ruth was thought highly of, by those who knew her and loved deeply by her family. She passed away in the home she grew up in, after a very hard battle with lung cancer.
