HUSTON ROBERT SAMPLES, AKA JAMES HUSTON SAMPLES
Note: Huston Robert Samples. Also known as, James Huston Samples. However, Huston Robert Samples is his birth name and his legal name. The mistake or decision to alter the original record of his name was made after he left wife #1 to be with another woman who became wife #2. The 1920 US Federal Census supports this and records his name in 1920 as, Huston R Samples. He also used two additional different dates for his birth year of 1886, but he used both 1885 and 1878 later in life. He also stated on Military Draft Card that he was born in Pedigrew Arkansas, but the only town close to that name is Pettigrew Arkansas. Perhaps a typo, but birthdate was also different by 7 years changed from 1885 to 1878. This was in 1942 and he claimed to be 64 years old when he was in fact 57 years old. Also, he claims to be with his first wife, Nora Bertha Kirk and he was not with her in 1942. I never met my maternal grandfather, but it appears he abandoned his first wife & children, when the youngest child was 2 years old. I think the oldest sons went to live with him in about 1930 because the 1930 US Federal Census has Nora Bertha Kirk as widowed. I suppose she was too embarrassed or feeling ashamed to say he had left her for another woman or deserted her. So he emerges sometime later with different name, birthdate and other discrepancies. I love my grandfather, but not some of his choices. Maybe it was desperate times...but often wondered how Grandmother Nora Bertha Kirk-Samples provided for herself and younger children, all girls and a baby boy. I'd like to think he helped her as best he could in providing for his children.
