Roy, was the son of Luther Bergeron and Selener G. Bergeron of New Roads LA who enlisted in the US Marine Corps on January 9, 1969 in New Orleans LA. He arrived in Vietnam on July 3 1969 and was assigned for duty with Company I, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

A Platoon sized patrol was maneuvering through dense vegetation on the North Slope of Hill 484 in the Duy Xuyen District of Quang Nam Province where the men began encountering a significant number of hidden BT (Booby Trapped) explosive devices. One device, probably an M-26AI grenade was tripped and detonated resulting in one Marine being wounded and Cpl Bergeron killed by fragmentation wounds from the hostile device.
