Major Lansdowne passed away on Wednesday, September 8, 2010. He was born July 5, 1918 in Storey County, Iowa. The family moved to Banning, California then later to Marshfield, Oregon where he graduated from high school.
In 1936 he enlisted in the 249th Coast Artillery. After he received an honorable discharge from the Army in 1947, he transitioned into the newly created USAAF. Major Lansdowne then served in Japan and Korea, where he received many citations and decorations including the Bronze Star.
Upon retirement from the Air Force, he spent several years working in the private sector and enjoying life in Florida with his wife, Kitty. The Lansdowne's moved to Air Force Village II in 1987 where they spent their final years. Les dove directly into the planning and development of the social functions that are still used today. He designed, decorated, danced and volunteered throughout the Village. His artwork is still used, and can be seen throughout the year. He was genuinely loved by all and responded to his official name "HEY LES." Whatever was needed, he assisted in getting it done.
In 2003 he was recognized by the Village with a plaque that was given to him in appreciation for the dedication and time given to the residents of AFVII. In 2004, he was awarded 1st Place in TAHSA's "Art is Ageless" Hard Crafts competition. His art was featured on the cover of that year's "Art is Ageless" calendar.
Major Lansdowne is survived by his daughter, Sue Ann Ziegler and her husband, Dean, of Eagar, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his wife, Kitty in 1993. Both will be interred at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. In accordance with Major Lansdowne's wishes, there will not be any services; rather, he wanted only a reception to be held in celebration of his life.
A Celebration of Life Reception will be held Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in the Health Care Center Activities Room.
