The 5th Texas Infantry Regiment was authorized by the War Department of the Confederacy on October 1, 1861; assembled at Richmond, Virginia, in October, 1861. Its members were recruited in the counties of Harris, Colorado, Leon, Walker, Montgomery, Washington, Jefferson, Liberty, Milam, Polk, and Trinity. The Texas Infantry Regiments were formed into the 1st, 4th, and 5th. These were the only Texas troops to fight in the Army of Northern Virginia.
