He attended school in Bertha, Minn. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in February 1944 and served until May 1946. Following his discharge, he returned home. He then moved to Pendleton, Ore., where he worked for Harris Pine Mills Furniture Co.
He married Ruth Rivinius on May 11, 1947 at her parents' home in Ridgeview, S.D. In May 1948 they moved to Ridgeview and began farming. In 1979 they moved to Mobridge. He retired in the fall of 1988. He was a member of the Mobridge Seventh-day Adventist Church and served as an elder and deacon. He also was a past member of the Dewey County Agriculture Soul and Conservation Service Committee.
Melvin is survived by his wife Ruth; son, Max; daughters: Mrs. Richard (Roxanne) Cummings and Jacquelyn Truax; brothers: Maurice, and Al; sisters: Mrs. Henry (Charlotte) Michelson, Mrs. Burdette (Laura) Barnhart, Mrs. Myron (Lorna) Snell, and Mrs. Norman (Norma Jean) Snell; and three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
